Quick answer

Baking soda, vinegar, percarbonate, and coconut soap: natural substitutes for conventional detergent, fabric softener, bleach, and stain remover.

Why look for natural alternatives

Conventional laundry products contain a long list of chemicals: phosphates, sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances, and artificial dyes. Every wash leaves residue on your clothes that comes into contact with your skin all day, and those same residues end up in the city's water system.

The good news is that natural substitutes exist that clean, soften, and remove stains just as effectively, or better, without the side effects. They're cheaper, safer, and you can find them at any grocery store in Medellín.

Detergent → Baking soda + coconut soap

Baking soda is probably the most versatile product you can keep at home for laundry. It works as:

  • A natural deodorizer, neutralizes odors instead of masking them
  • A grease remover, its alkaline pH dissolves oil and sweat stains
  • A soap booster, combined with coconut soap, you get an effective homemade detergent

How to do it

For a normal washing machine load:

  1. Add ½ cup of baking soda directly into the drum along with the dirty laundry
  2. Put 2–3 tablespoons of grated coconut soap in the detergent compartment
  3. Wash normally. Clothes come out clean, residue-free, and with a neutral scent

Coconut soap is a natural surfactant that produces lather and lifts grease. You can find it at health food stores and some supermarkets. It biodegrades completely and is safe for sensitive skin.

Emma Tip: For extra dirty loads (gym towels, kids' clothes, pet bedding), increase to 1 cup of baking soda and add ½ cup of sodium percarbonate to the drum.

Fabric softener → White vinegar

White cleaning vinegar is the best natural fabric softener out there. It doesn't leave a vinegar smell on clothes (the scent evaporates during the rinse cycle) and serves three functions:

  • Softens fibers, dissolves lime and detergent residue that makes clothes stiff
  • Eliminates odors, its acidity neutralizes odor-causing bacteria
  • Prevents static, especially useful in dry climates or with synthetic fabrics

How to use it

Add ½ cup of white vinegar to your washing machine's fabric softener compartment. That's it. Don't mix it with detergent in the same cycle, put the baking soda and soap in the detergent compartment, and the vinegar separately in the softener compartment.

Emma Tip: If your clothes have a persistent odor (gym clothes, damp towels), add 1 cup of vinegar directly to the drum and run an extra rinse cycle.

Bleach → Hydrogen peroxide and lemon

Chlorine bleach is one of the most aggressive products you can use on your clothes. It discolors colored fabrics, weakens fibers, and irritates the skin and respiratory tract. There are two alternatives:

Hydrogen peroxide (3% solution)

Ideal for whitening white and colored clothes:

  • For white clothes: Add ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide to the detergent compartment in a normal wash
  • Stain pretreatment: Apply hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain, let it sit for 10 minutes, and wash normally
  • Whitening soak: 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide in a bucket of cold water, soak the garment for 30 minutes

Lemon juice

The citric acid in lemons is a gentle natural bleach:

  • For dull whites: Squeeze the juice of 2 lemons over the garment, leave it in the sun for 30 minutes, then wash normally
  • For stains on light-colored clothes: Mix lemon juice with baking soda to form a paste, apply to the stain, and let it sit for 15 minutes

Stain remover → Sodium percarbonate

Sodium percarbonate is the most powerful natural stain remover that exists. It's the active ingredient in many commercial stain removers, but without the chemical additives.

  • Blood, coffee, wine, sweat stains, dissolve 1 tablespoon in 1 liter of boiling water and apply to the stain
  • Yellowed underarms, soak the garment in the solution for 10–30 minutes
  • Whitening white clothes, add 2 tablespoons to the drum along with the detergent
